Due to wide variations of climatic condition, such as tropical, sub-tropical and temperate, a wide variety of mushrooms are found in the forests of the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal. Out of 1.5 million fungi found in the world only 69000 species have been identified as wild mushrooms. Mushrooms are micro scopic fungi devoid of chlorophyll. They have been utilized as a natural source of nourishing food for human being from time immemorial, all mushrooms may look tempting and attractive, but not all of them are edible. There are many poisonous mushrooms that are likely to cause death, if consumed without due care. Here we are focusing on Morel Mushroom found in himalayas above 3500m sea level. In Nepal, 760 species of mushrooms have already been recorded as wild. Of these, 170 species have been tested and proven as 'edible mushrooms". However, only a few species have a high demand from abroad. They are

3. Cordyceps sinensis (Yarsagumba in Nepali)
4. Craterellus connucopiodes (Horn of plenty)

In addition, there are some cultivated mushrooms in Nepal, which are as follows:
1. Agaricus bisporus (Button type)
2. Lentinus edodes (Shiitake)
3. Pleurotus sajor-caju (Oyster)
4. Pleurotus ostreatus (Oyster)
5. Vol varielia vol vaceae (Straw mushroom)
1. Morchella sp. (Morel)
Two species of morels - Morchella conica and Morchella esculenta are available in the high hills of Nepal. April and May are the most favorable months for these to grow in the coniferous forest. This category of fungus prefers chalky or sandy soil; the heads of their fruiting bodies are grooved and are connected by short transverse folds, 2-5 cm. high and 2-5 cm. thick at the base. Morels are excellent to eat. It is recommended to dry and ground them to powder for special flavor. Most of morels collected in the forest of Nepal are exported abroad. It is not yet cultivated artificially.

This category of mushroom is commercially cultivated and is produced in large quantity. It is cultivated in over a hundred countries in all the continents, the largest quantity of which was grown in the U.S.A., China, France, the Netherlands and the UK. (Chang and Miles) in 1996. The agro-climate of the hills of Nepal is found quite favorable to produce the fruiting bodies with minimum or without the use of air conditioner.
